If These Trees Could Talk - Brian W. Smith

In my early 20's, after an argument with my ex I would always go to the park. The ritual was the same - I would pull out my notebook and start writing out my thoughts in poetry form. I would often stare at the trees and admire its strength... through rain, snow, and storms... it remained standing. Trees were a metaphor for my life. No matter what came my way. I had to keep STANDING! After a good cry, I would laugh to myself and say... "Thank GOD!! These trees can't talk."

REVIEW:

Josh & Stevie are best friends who are both dealing with sexual abuse from their mother's boyfriends. The trees in the woods serve as a safe haven from their troubles. During one of their meetings they devise a plan to kill their mother's boyfriends. How long can the trees keep their secret?

Never the one to avoid subjects that may be taboo to others, Mr. Smith writes about the subject of sexual abuse. I was prepared to trump the author and figure out the ending, but I can honestly say the ending had me speechless.

Growing up as a child, I had the "Grown Man Talk" drilled in my head so many times I can recite it in my sleep. As a parent I give the "Grown Man Talk" to my children including the boys. There are so many mothers who turned a blind eye to the suspicions of sexual abuse, because they fear being alone. If These Trees Could Talk should serve as an eye-opener for all parents.

I highly recommend this book.

In 2010, one of my Facebook friends posted... If you could meet an author, who would it be?  My answer was Brian W. Smith. This year, I was very fortunate to meet Brian W. Smith. Even though I didn’t get to pick his brain… I will go on record and say – It was one of the happiest days of my life. As I scanned the room, I watched Mr. Smith connect with each reader in the room and that made me respect him even more. That’s a true sign of someone that appreciates their fan base.

The Healing of Love & Laughter - Rickey Teems II

Some smiles reflect more than just good times, occasionally they are a mask for pain. Comedian Isaac Golden learns the bright lights of Hollywood may shine for triumph, but in the shadows, drugs, wild women, and the fast life are waiting to take their toll on his soul. With the health of his childrens' mother on the brink, a sex-crazed mistress on the side, the criminal woes of his inept younger brother, and increasing stage opportunities, trying to balance ambitions of stardom with reality is no laughing matter. When his faith and obligations are challenged beyond his control, Isaac realizes that overnight success can be tomorrow's biggest failure. He soon finds himself in a deep and dark hole, clueless how it all happened so fast. Will he have any friends and prayer left to help him overcome the guilt and remorse of his ways, or will time run out before he can truly discover: The Healing of Love and Laughter. - Amazon

Isaac Golden, a struggling comedian who's conflicted between his responsibilities at home & his dreams of stardom.  Isaac finds out the bright lights in Hollywood also includes sex & drugs. Isaac has embarked on the biggest challenge of his life. Will he be able to balance his family life & still pursue his dreams? Will his dreams of the bright lights dim fast?

We are also introduced to some characters that will definitely have you experiencing emotions of happiness & sadness.

Joey - Isaac's brother who in my opinion could have had an occupation as a comedian. He has a natural gift of making people laugh, but he finds himself in more trouble than he anticipated.

Janna - Isaac's girlfriend who holds the family down but after her health takes a turn for the worse she begins to rethink some of the sacrifices she has made for Isaac's dream.

As I read this book, I reflected on some of the choices I have made in my personal life. I thought of the "missed" opportunities of "love", the pursuit of my dreams, and my responsibilities as a mother. Then I remembered without a TEST there's no TESTIMONY.

Mr. Teems II brings to life the story of redemption, pain, sorrow, laughter, and faith. This is the second book I have read from Mr. Teems II and I can boldly say.... "Rickey Teems II never fails to give readers "Food for Thought". He steps out of the mold of familiarity and blazes a trail of his own.

No matter where our lives may lead us...... We all want "Healing from Love & Laughter" .

I highly recommend this book.

Guilty By Association - Pat Simmons

Life and a last name is all that Kevin “Kidd” Jamieson received from his father, but that doesn’t stop his father’s family from seeking him out.

In Pat Simmons’ latest book, Guilty by Association, we meet Kevin Jamieson; a man with a chip on his shoulders the size of the Grand Canyon. Living in Boston with his mother and brother, he is recently unemployed and trying to make ends meet.

Enter the other Jamieson’s, Parke, Cameron and Malcolm. Seeing that there was nothing positive about him staying in Boston, he agrees to move to St. Louis with his newfound cousins. He bounces from several jobs until he is bribed to work in a nursing home/rehabilitation center to keep an eye on everyone’s favorite Stacey Adam wearing Grandma, Grandma BB, who has suffered a stroke.

On his first day, he meets Eva, a woman on fire for God and strong in her convictions. Kevin is immediately smitten with Ms. Savoy but she could care less. The more these two work together; Eva realizes that there is more to Kidd beneath that hard exterior. Through their talks, he discovers God’s grace and love. Eva manages to win over even the toughest critic, Kami, the precocious daughter of Parke and his wife Cheney.

Throughout the book the resounding message is Love and that ultimate love coming from God.

I love this series and can’t wait for the installment which will be about Kidd’s bad boy brother, Ace.

Never Dead - Jumata Emill Jones

Emerson McGhee & his wife, Danielle moves back to Emerson's hometown of South Baton Rouge to live in the house that was once owned by Emerson's recently deceased grandmother. Emerson isn't too happy about revisiting his past, but he knows it the best thing to do financially for his family. The couple is forced to face some unsettling things that threatens to put their lives in jeopardy. They soon realize you can't outrun your past... NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY!!!

The first thing that caught my attention before opening the book were the words on the cover ... "Never Dead is an E. Lynn Harris meets Stephen King." I love Stephen King and my love for E. Lynn Harris is beyond what my words can express, so when someone says that I take notice. After reading this selection, I'm not ready to compare Jumata Emill Jones with E. Lynn Harris or Stephen King. I will say this.. Jumata Emill Jones is in a category of his own.

Never Dead is a welcome change from what I have been reading lately... I was pleasantly surprised with the twists and turns he dared to take with this book. His writing style is captivating, stimulating, and very memorable. There were times I was nervous as I was read the words in this book.

I applaud this author for giving the readers a solid read.

Jumata Emill Jones was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His first foray into writing occurred unexpectedly when he was just nine years old and wrote a skit about the dangers of drug use as a class project for his elementary school’s “Just Say No” campaign. After seeing great potential in his work, Jumata’s third-grade teacher, Mrs. Fleming, encouraged him to cast some of his classmate
in the skit and he was allowed to showcase the mini-production to his entire class.

After that experience Jumata became a self-proclaimed author and publisher. While his friends played outside after school, Jumata jotted down every colorful story that popped into his juvenile mind and bound them together with construction paper and staples before giving them to his mother to read every night before she went to sleep––unfortunately his mother has held on to many of these primitive works. She has them tucked away in the attic of her home.
Between junior high school and college, Jumata wrote a bevy of short stories, plays, young adult serial novels and a host of completed and unfinished novels––none of which he ever tried to publish for whatever reasons. After dropping out of college after just three semesters in 1996, he worked an eclectic mix of jobs for several years, which included being a waiter, a reproduction clerk at an engineering firm, and a dealer in a casino. During this time he wrote sporadically. In 2004, disenchanted with the obscure path his life was taking, Jumata returned to college and earned his BA in Mass Communication from Southern University in Baton Rouge. After graduation he immediately joined the work force as a journalist for the local newspaper in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
During the summer of 2009, Jumata began writing feverishly again after a brief hiatus––due to his return to college––and completed several short stories and a novel. More confident in his work than ever, Jumata attempted to secure an agent and finally get his work published. He nearly had his foot in the door but was ultimately unsuccessful due to the wobbly economy and its backlash on the publishing industry. Instead of giving up, Jumata stepped out on faith and launched his blog, “Urban Nightmares” as a way to release his twisted tales to the world and hopefully build a fan base that can prove to large New York publishing houses that he’s worth the gamble. Jumata believes, passionately, that readers are ready to add a new voice to their bookshelves.

In April, he published his debut novel "Never Dead" to rave reviews.
Jumata now divides his time between being a journalist and a author. He is already hard at work on his second novel, as well as a collection of short stories.

Ride or Die Chick – J.M. Benjamin

Treacherous Freeman lost his mother at an early age and watched his dad go to prison. Treacherous quickly turned to a life of crime as a way to survive the streets. After witnessing her mom get killed by her dad, Teflon Jackson was forced to grow up fast in the mean streets of Virginia. After meeting in a Juvenile Detention Center, and sharing their stories with each other the two of them became inseparable.  In an effort to survive they turn to what they know best … wreaking havoc.
Will Treacherous & Teflon take crime sprees too far? Will they be able to turn their lives around before it’s too late? Would their love be able to survive it all?

I have heard the term Ride or Die used numerous times in my life, but I wonder do people really understand the responsibilities that come with the term “Ride or Die”.  In my opinion, Ride or Die is having someone’s back no matter what the situation calls for. Treacherous & Teflon love for each other sums up the definition of “Ride or Die”.
I was very surprised that I haven’t read a JM Benjamin book before this selection.  I guess I felt familiar with JM Benjamin because of his statuses on my Facebook Timeline. I often refer to him as, “THE AUTHOR THAT NEVER SLEEPS…” After watching promos for Ride or Die Chick 3, I was bitten by the curiosity bug and decided to buy Ride or Die Chick 1 & 2. After reading this selection in less than 24 hours, I was upset with myself for not reading it sooner.
I love the fact that JM Benjamin is able to tell a complete story without being too wordy. This is a gritty tale mixed with a love story that is very believable. This author does an excellent job giving his readers the complete back story of each character.  I love reading a book with SOLID writing.  Even if you don’t agree with what the characters are doing, this author writes in such a way that makes you care about each character and their story.  I can’t wait to read Ride or Die Chick 2 & 3
Ride or Die Chick 3 will be released November 26th, so if you haven’t read 1 & 2 – click on the links below and be prepared to be BLOWN AWAY…

It Can Happen To You - Phette Ogburn

The first installment in the It Can Happen To You series features the three short stories: S & M: Sexts & Messaging, The ID and Organized Karma. Come follow Sabra, Nya and LaTrease on their journeys as they cope with issues of loneliness, lust, sex, betrayal, deceit and love. - Amazon

It Can Happen To You: Volume 1 contains three short stories that will blow you away.

S&M (Sexts & Messaging) - a cautionary tale of what happens when an online friendship turns into obsession.

THE ID - After meeting Chazz, Nya thinks she has found the love of her life until he vanishes with no trace. When she uncovers the truth of his disappearance, she realizes her life will never be the same.

ORGANIZED KARMA - Destinee and Tracy have been friends for years, but as they get older their lives take them on two different paths.

I really enjoyed reading this selection. Author Phette Ogburn does an excellent job in writing characters you can related to. After reading the first story, this author grabbed my attention from beginning to end. The only issue I had with this selection was Organized Karma, I felt that story was added as a filler to complete the book.

Phette Ogburn is definitely an author to watch out for. I will definitely recommend this book.

Phette (pronounced fee-ett) Ogburn was born in Wayne, Michigan in 1975. According to her mother's accounts, and some of her own, before she was five years old, she was reciting television shows, movies and commercials -verbatim, which is something she still does today and has somehow passed down to both of her children. She has been keeping a journal since she was 19 years old, and loves referring to them from time-to-time for reflection. Included in her list of things she loves are: family, writing, reading, pizza, sweets, movies, drama shows, natural hair and tattoos. She released her first book IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU, a series of short stories, August 29, 2011. She's currently working on a novel, a short film and more short stories.

Regression - Rickey Teems II

What would do if you woke up to the news of Hip-Hop being banned in The United States of America? What would you do if they separated classrooms based on the color of your skin? What do you think would happen if they cut off welfare? What would you do if all African-Americans were order to turn themselves in to the police or face death?

Aeneas wakes up to the news of Hip-Hop being banned, schools being segregated, and welfare coming to an end, and he believes someone is playing a crude joke on him. He soon realizes this isn’t joke and his life will never be the same.

I fell in love with the characters in this book. Aeneas, a father of one trying to be the best father to his son, Naashon, but his baby mother, Leah is making it difficult for him. Apphia, Aenea’s new girlfriend tries her best to keep the peace, but finds it hard to do when Leah is around. Will they be able to put their differences aside or Will those differences get them killed?

Author Rickey Teems II does an excellent job of challenging his readers to think outside of the norm. I have to say some will find REGRESSION by Rickey Teems II controversial, but I believe this is a book that everyone needs to read. As I read this selection, the thought that kept popping in my head was … “THIS REALLY COULD HAPPEN!” I know many people try to avoid the topic of race relations, but this book will definitely have you wanting to talk about it.

This is the first book I have read by Rickey Teems II and it won't be the last. It was a much needed break from the "Love have given me the blues" books. If you don't know about Rickey Teems II.. I think its time you found out about him.

Truth or Dare? - Dwayne S. Joseph

Dwayne S. Joseph has delivered another best-selling book to masses. In Truth or Dare, we are introduced to Jess, a married mother of two who starts an online friendship with one of her classmates. What starts off as an innocent friendship ends in a deadly game of Truth & Dare.

I remember playing Truth or Dare as a kid, and the furthest we ever went was a kiss on the cheek. Mr. Joseph shows us what can happen when the game of Truth or Dare is played by adults. I love Dwayne S. Joseph's style of writing. He has a way of getting the readers attention from the first page, and keeping it to the end of the book.

Twenty percent of divorces involve Facebook and 80 percent of divorce lawyers have reported a spike in the number of cases that use social media for evidence, according to a survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. I was happy that Mr. Joseph tackled this subject of online "friendships". After reading this book, the question that floated in my head was.. "How well do I know the people I come in contact with online?"

I highly recommend this book. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

What happens when you put Grammy Award Winning Artist, Kanye West & two-time Oscar Award-nominated animator and graphic artist Bill Plympton come together... you get a MASTERPIECE!!!

The illustrations in this book are vivid, creative, and beautiful. Bill Plympton's art work breathes life into Kanye West lyrics. Included in this book are lyrics and a brief summary of Kanye's music. I wished it included an in-depth detail meaning of each song, but sometimes the smallest thing can inspire us to do great things.

Go The F**K To Sleep - Adam Mansbach

Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don't always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland. Profane, affectionate, and radically honest, California Book Award-winning author Adam Mansbach's verses perfectly capture the familiar--and unspoken--tribulations of putting your little angel down for the night. In the process, they open up a conversation about parenting, granting us permission to admit our frustrations, and laugh at their absurdity. With illustrations by Ricardo Cortes, Go the F**k to Sleep is beautiful, subversive, and pants-wettingly funny--a book for parents new, old, and expectant. You probably should not read it to your children. - Amazon

I'm a big Samuel Jackson fan, so when I heard he was narrating a bedtime story named Go The F**k To Sleep I knew I had to read it. I listened to the Audible version since it was offered free to members. I can't say I fell out of my seat laughing, but I was amused. I would say this is a bedtime story for adults, because I don't know many parents that will tell their kids out loud to GO THE F**K TO SLEEP.

Side Note: Even though I know alot of parents may have those thoughts in their head.

Max On Life - Max Lucado

Max writes about the role of prayer, the purpose of pain, and the reason for our ultimate hope. He responds to the day-to-day questions-parenting quandaries, financial challenges, difficult relationships-as well as to the profound: Is God really listening? - Including topical and scriptural indexes and filled with classic Lucado encouragement and insight, Max on Life will quickly become a favorite resource for pastors and ministry leaders as well as new and mature believers. - Amazon

I was first introduced to Max Lucado when I was working in a factory. My former co-worker always had a Max Lucado devotional book in her hand... so that peaked my interest. Our last day of working (temp job) - she gave me a book called When Christ Comes by Max Lucado. I been reading his books since that day.

Max On Life - Mr. Lucado takes the time to answers letters he has received over the years. He gives the reader insight on many problems they may be dealing with in their lives. I think it is a great book to have in your collection. Sometimes life problems can send us scrambling for answers... Max Lucado shows us GOD words are all the COMFORT we need.

Proverbs 31:The Virtuous Black Woman Volume 1 - Russel Blake

Russel Blake writes an encouraging book detailing how he believes a woman should be treated. The book covers a multitude of topics; such as Quiet Strength, Black Woman Rising, Fellowship and more that are sure to touch The Virtuous Black Woman’s heart and mind.

I enjoy reading books that encourage Women. The message the author is trying to convey is powerful and uplifting, but the delivery of that message is flat.

Some parts of the book read as a bad love letter from a man trying to get out of the doghouse with his wife or girlfriend. An example: Page 66 – “Because of you the greatest love songs that were created were made; From The Song of Solomon to his Queen Makeda of Sheba; To Luther Vandross’s – Here and Now.”  - REALLY!!

Overall, however the book does, to some degree offer guidance in the mysterious world of relationships. It would be recommended for young males, 16-24, who have just begun to discover the existence of the virtuous black woman. It’s also not a bad refresher course for older black men who sometimes forget the treasures they have and desire to keep.
