Review: I DECLARE - Joel Osteen

It was only right that I end Book Referees - 31 Authors – 31 Books – 31 Reviews with Joel Osteen’s I Declare: 31 Promises to Speak Over Your Life.

Remember what Proverbs 18:21 says…

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.

So why not declare the life GOD intends you to have. I Declare gives readers 31 Devotions that focuses on the promises GOD has for us. This is a very positive, encouraging, and inspirational book. We always encounter things that set our blood pressure over the limit mark, but we have to remember to lay our burdens on THE LORD.
You can use the book as a monthly devotion – or read it straight through with your highlighter. Don't worry about this book getting dusty on your shelf, because you can reread it and still learn new things.

I highly recommend this book.

Review: A Funny Thing Happened On My Way To The Future - Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox abandoned high school to pursue an acting career, but went on to receive honorary degrees from several universities and garner the highest accolades for his acting, as well as for his writing. In his new book, he inspires and motivates graduates to recognize opportunities, maximize their abilities, and roll with the punches--all with his trademark optimism, warmth, and humor.

REVIEW

I have read book from Michael J. Fox and loved every minute of it. So when I seen this book at my local bookstore - I was curious to read it. I know the book is targeted to college graduates, but I feel everyone can gain a little insight from it.
Michael J. Fox gives readers short anecdotes about his life journey. From high-school drop-out, starving artist (and I do mean starving), to Hollywood Actor. He even shares a little about his life with Parkinson’s disease.
This book was short & sweet – straight to the point. If you are looking for something quick to read – grab this book and enjoy. I read this book in less than an hour.

REVIEW

This was the first time I have read anything by this author and I wasn't disappointed in the least. The story starts off slow, but picks up the pace and grabs your attention. I usually don't get into the mystery/crime books, but I have to say I really enjoyed this one.

REVIEW

The story was just so-so for me. It started off excruciatingly slow in the beginning but only picked up a little at the end. Sophia and Zane's characters were too childish for my liking. That was a put off for me, the only redeeming quality of the book was that there was a murder-mystery twist that I liked. Other than that, it just wasn't that good.

Review: Eating My Feelings - Mark Brennan Rosenburg

The follow-up collection of comic essays from a self-publishing dynamo, which skewers his struggles with weight and body image, both as a kid in the 1980s and as a gay man in the 2000s. Mark Rosenberg has had more ups and downs with his weight than Oprah-but unlike Oprah, no one gives a sh*t. Coming of age very outrageously as an overweight, soon-to-be gay kid, he learns to relate to others by way of his beloved Melrose Place and Clueless-which serves him well when exiled to fat camp and faced with an opportunity to bribe an adulterous counselor or poison his stepmother by birthday cake-and thinks nothing of dressing as Homey the Clown (in blackface) for Halloween. This sets him up for adulthood in the image-obsessed world of gay men in New York City, where he hires personal trainers he wants to sleep with, applies an X-rated twist to Julie & Julia in an attempt to reach blogger stardom, and has an imaginary relationship with the man on the P90X workout infomercials that becomes a little bit too real. Hilarious, heartwarming (as if), and especially scandalous, Eating My Feelings leaves no stone unturned and no piece of red velvet cake uneaten.

REVIEW

Before reading this book I had never heard of Mark Rosenberg, and that makes me a little sad. This was a great book; I really loved the way he writes. This man is hilarious in my opinion, the way he describes the things that happened to him was so comical. Not too many people can deal with what he has and still have a happy outlook on life.

The world would be a much better place if more people took on life's ups and downs the way he has. The message I got from this book is that no matter what cards you are dealt in life, you control the outcome. Why not have a blast while doing it!!!

Virtual Book Blog Tour: Choosing the Road Less Traveled - Myckelle P. Williams

Born in an environment of drugs, sex, broken relationships, and parental neglect, 18-year-old Myckelle Williams eventually faced a major crossroads in her own life, and the prospect of becoming a statistic, as a desperate teenager unexpectedly pregnant with her second unplanned child.  Like so many young women across America, she found herself literally at a ‘fork in the road’ while travelling life’s path.  Myckelle soon discovers that each choice in life come with a heavy price to pay, and is forced to decide whether or not to end her unplanned pregnancy. You will be amazed as Myckelle tells how one uncommon act of unselfish love by total strangers helped her to discover forgiveness, break generations of dysfunction, and walk away from destructive cycles that enabled her to change her life, and family, from the inside out.

Join Myckelle on a journey of hope, healing, and finding love in unexpected places, that include powerful life lessons for the reader with each new chapter.
By pulling from Robert Frost’s poem, ‘The Road Not Taken’, you will be led on a journey of self- discovery, forgiveness, and the impact of everyday choices.  Her story of faith, courage, and victory over circumstance, contains powerful illustrations for women of all ages, races, and backgrounds, which provide guidance in creating new traditions and generational patterns in your own family, as well as breaking old strongholds and family patterns that threaten to keep you and your children from the Purpose that God intended. As she struggles with often agonizing acceptance of the consequences of her own choices, you too will be inspired to reflect on your own past decisions, and through her heartache learn about the miracle of life’s true purpose...and discover the unconditional reality of God’s unfailing love.

PROLOGUE
Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart for my holy purpose...I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.
~Jeremiah 1:5
“I’d like to make an appointment...for an abortion.”
Desperation and shame filled my voice, and I hoped the lady on the other end didn’t know me or my parents.
“How many weeks are you? When was your last period?” The lady on the other end asks, seemingly not surprised, sounding more annoyed than anything else.
I gave her the dates she requested, asking “How much will that cost?”
Annoyed sigh. “You are fourteen-and-a-half weeks. Well, the process will be much longer because you are further along, but it will be $375 total.”
“Do you take Medicaid?”
“Yes.”
“When can I come in?
“Tuesday at 8 a.m.
“Do I need to bring anything?”
“Just your money, or Medicaid card, proof of pregnancy. And a ride home.”

I hung up and looked at my boyfriend. How were we going to afford that? We could barely afford to take care of our eleven month old son, the child I had had less than a year ago at age seventeen. “It’s cool.” He told me. “My sister has Medicaid. We can use her card. You just use her name and info.”

Review: The Wicked Girls - Alex Marwood

REVIEW

I couldn't put this book down. The Wicked Girls is a dark and gloomy thriller that keeps you hooked. I liked that you have two stories in one. The story is about two girls who have kept a terrible secret for many years, and the guilt and fear that goes along with such a horrible act.

This was a very intense story and I loved every strange twist the story took.

REVIEW

This is the ninth book in the series, and I highly recommend it for all urban fantasy fans! This was the first book I have read of this series, and I don't think you need to read them all in order to enjoy this one.

The author gives enough detail on most of the characters and a clear back story so that you know what is what without a problem. I loved Gin's character the most and would like to get to know Owen's character better. I will be reading more of this series.

Review: A Family Affair - Reshonda Tate Billingsley

Award-winning author ReShonda Tate Billingsley, whose bestselling fiction “tackles some of life’s toughest situations” (The Florida Times-Union), unravels the secrets in a mother’s past that turn her daughter’s life upside down—by revealing the family she never knew existed.

Her dream of studying dance at Juilliard is within reach, but Olivia Dawson turns down the opportunity, choosing instead to stay with her ailing mother in the Houston projects where they barely make ends meet. Lorraine Dawson is Olivia’s whole world, and now Olivia insists on being there for her. But when Lorraine learns Olivia is sacrificing college for her sake, her heartache triggers a series of shattering events that results in Olivia discovering her father, a man she was told had died years ago. But he is alive and well—and he’s the powerful CEO of one of the country’s richest corporations. With her best friend urging her to claim a much-deserved chunk of Bernard Wells’s fortune, Olivia seeks out his Los Angeles mansion.

But it’s not money she wants—it’s answers: Why did he abandon Lorraine when Olivia was three years old? Why did they suffer in poverty while he gave his “real” wife and son a life of luxury? Opening up the past, however, is more complicated than Olivia—or Bernard—expected, and the pain of yesterday’s sins must be confronted before true healing and a bright tomorrow can begin.

REVIEW

Great heartwarming story that had me hooked from the first few pages. I really loved Olivia’s character; she was such a strong and loving person. She had so many bad things going on in her life that made her want to put her dreams on hold and take care of her sick mother.
This book has a lot of ups and downs and you will be rooting for her character all the way to the very end.
I gave this book 5 stars and highly recommend anyone to give it a chance, you will love it!!!

Review: White Trash Beautiful - Teresa Mummert

REVIEW

I really enjoyed this book. I can't even describe the emotional roller-coaster ride you're taken on during this story. Cass's character has had such a hard life, and still wants to take care of the ones she loves (even if they don't deserve it). This girl has a heart of gold. You will be rooting for her to get her happy ending.

This book dealt with real issues such as drug use, physical abuse by a loved one, and the stress of coping with it all. Tucker was my hero in this story. He saw something in Cass and believed in her, even if she didn't believe in herself. Heartwarming read and a page-turner for sure.

Review: The Paris Lawyer - Sylvie Granotier

REVIEW

This story left me very confused throughout, there was a lot of back and forth of present and past issues that kind of melded together in an odd way.

For me, I just didn't know who was telling the story most of the time. I did enjoy how the story brought to light what truly happened when Catherine's mother was murdered. I didn't care for Catherine's character in particular.

This was only because she didn't really do her research like you would assume a lawyer would. She mostly came across leads accidentally, and it felt like she was a very cold type of person. Other than the confusion on my part at times it was an okay read.

Review: Dead End - J. Anthony Graves

REVIEW

This was a fast-paced and exciting story that kept me on my toes until the end. I really enjoyed the author's style of writing. He has a way of immersing you in every detail and aspect of the story. As a reader, you feel like your right there with each character as they make every decision good or bad. I absolutely fell in love with Legend's character, mostly because I could relate to him wanting something more out of life and having to use an unconventional method to get where he needed to be.

Life is about making those tough choices and sometimes having to do things that most people wouldn't. This was a great book that gives you an inside look at the rough side of the windy city, and the ending was something I wasn't expecting. I was shocked in a good way.

I am so looking forward to the next book!!!

Review: Baking with the Cake Boss - Buddy Valastro

REVIEW

100 of Buddy's Best Recipes and Decorating Secrets…... Who wouldn’t want to know some of Buddy’s recipes & decorating secrets?! As a Cake Stylist, I was very happy to read and review this book. The cake world is changing everyday – who would have thought we would see the day when you can so do so many designs with cake. The possibilities are endless.

I was very disappointed when I tried two of the recipes from this book. I thought maybe the editors left out an ingredient or two. I guess the real recipe is one of Buddy’s secrets.

Overall, this book was an okay read for me. There were a few things I learned from this book - nothing life changing. Who knows maybe one day I will try another recipe, but I’m not in a rush.

Review: Death at Willow Creek Mine - J.D. Savid

REVIEW

This book was just an okay read for me. I liked the story, but it just left me feeling like it was incomplete somehow.  My biggest problem with the book was the ending; I felt like the story was starting to get more interesting and then "Bam" end of the road. I feel like there could have been so much more to add to this story. For example, Who was Nathan really talking with throughout the story? Was he psychic or just crazy like Hector says? WHAT did he see while up on that mountain? There were many unanswered questions to contend with.

Review: The Buffalo City Czar - James Scott

For Julius Smith there was no aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty to transfer control of his clandestine empire to him. At seventeen-years-old, he built his Black Crime Syndicate from the bottom, and morphed into the Buffalo City Czar. Set in the late eighties to the early nineties Julius Caesar takes the country by storm and builds a mafia powerful enough to rival the Italian mob and the United States Government. - Amazon

This was a very inspiring story. For someone who came up with very little, this story  just goes to show how hard work and perseverance, always trumps  anything/anyone trying to keep  you down. This book has everything a reader could ask for, romance, intrigue, mystery and well written characters that bring this story to life. I was hooked from the first page and didn't want the story to end. Authors like this are few and far between, and this author should be proud of what he has accomplished with his writing. I love when an author can deliver such a profound message through their writing. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!!!!

Review: The Audubon Park Murder - Brian W. Smith

There's a Murder in Audubon Park... Don't Worry Donald "Sleepy" Carter is on the case... Then again... Is he really on the case? According to the people that know him - He's missing or worse... Dead.

Years ago, Donald "Sleepy" Carter decided to walk away from his job as a well-respected detective and just life in general. No one has heard from him since. After a murder is committed in Audubon Park, Sleepy decides to come out of hiding to help Rookie Detective, Elizabeth "Lizzy" Silverman solve the murder. There's a catch - No one can know he's alive.

Why is Donald "Sleepy" Carter so adamant about helping Lizzy solve this crime? Why should Lizzy trust a man she doesn't know? What is the real reason Sleepy Carter has come out of hiding? Well... I have the answers and so will you when you read this book.

When Brian W. Smith first announced he was throwing his "writing hat" in the Mystery genre I wasn't shocked because his other books have mystery twists to them. So it was a No-Brainer that he started writing in the Mystery genre.

The Audubon Park Murder reminded me why I'm such a big Brian W. Smith supporter. You can tell Mr. Smith did his research when it came to giving his readers an inside look in New Orleans. Mr. Smith does an excellent job capturing the raw emotions of Sleepy Carter. He's definitely a character I can't wait to learn more about.

The Audubon Park Murder is a fast-paced story full of twists and turns.

REVIEW

Before I start this review let me say this….

I’m a big fan of Wendy Williams…, but I’m going to say it like I mean it.

I can close my eyes and just imagine the conversation between Wendy and her friends…

Friend #1: Girl… you should write a book. You give so much good advice on your show! It’s a No-Brainer.

Friend #2: I Agree!!

Wendy: I have been thinking about it… let me call my agent.

Months Later… the public has Ask Wendy by Wendy Williams on the shelf of their local bookstore...

Well…. Maybe the conversation didn’t go exactly like I typed but remember I said I was imagining the conversation.

Ask Wendy is basically The World According to Wendy Williams – you can watch her T.V. show for free. I’m not going to say the book was horrible, because there was some good, funny, and a few hell-to-the naw advice in the book.

If you Ask Orsayor… I would say... Wendy, just devote a show every week for Ask Wendy.

How You Doin'?

Review: Joyland - Stephen King

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. - Amazon

REVIEW

Expect Nothing – Enjoy the Ride

That’s the rules when it comes to reading a Stephen King novel.

When I pre-ordered Joyland, I never read the synopsis I fell in love with the book cover. Plus, it’s a Stephen King novel. Judging from the cover, I was prepared to read a story about a crazy carnival serial killer, but when I began reading I knew I was preparing to start another journey.

Joyland tells the story of Devin Jones, a heartbroken college student that takes a summer job at an amusement park named Joyland.  Joyland is a low-budget version of Disneyland, but to the residents of North Carolina, it’s a place of fun rides, delicious food, and oh yeah… an unsolved murder that took place years ago on one of the popular rides, House of Horrors.

The story of Joyland was told in retrospect by the main character, Devin Jones – there were times throughout the book that I worried about Devin… then I thought… “Oh! That’s right Devin is still alive... he’s the one telling the story.”

Mr. King did an excellent job of developing characters that will stay in your heart long after closing the book. I also loved the fact the story was told in retrospect, which gave the readers a look in the future lives of the characters. Even though it made the story bittersweet because you find out some of the characters didn’t live happily ever after.

Stephen King is a versatile writer.  There’s no question why Stephen King is loved by millions. His style of writing can grab the attention of the reader's heart, mind, and soul.

Joyland.... What a Beautiful Ride...

Review: Borrowed Time - Donna Michele Ramos

REVIEW

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish; it was refreshing to read about an African American woman and her actual contributions during such an important turning point in history. Fawn's character had a way of making you feel every emotion, as if you were really in her shoes. The author did a fantastic job of combining real historical facts with a timeless love story. I adored the storyline and that you not only get to experience fawn and Cortlandt’s love story, but also that of her parents and grandparents. For me, that extra detail makes this book all the more interesting.

Review: Eve's Mixtape - Volume 1: The Ballad of Revenge

What happens when an affair is ignited by revenge? Love, communication, respect, and amazing sex are the keys to a marriage with longevity. However, when wandering eyes and thoughts become the actions of one, it will leave the other vengeful. In the end, love may not be enough to keep this marriage together. For the Dawson’s, love had become the last thing needed to keep their marriage together. When Eve decided to put her career on hold to stay home with their first child and Shamar’s career started to propel forward with his law firm, things between them started to dissolve. A year of counseling still left something missing from their marriage. After one night out with her friends, Eve would find just what she was missing – in the arms of a younger man. Ignoring the rhythmic beats of a failing marriage and that of a dangerous lover, Eve’s life would take a turn that would leave her looking up at a white ceiling waiting for her chance to live again. While Eve played with her fate, an old case from Shamar's past was on its' own quest for destruction. Cars with dark tinted windows and unknown occupants, death threats, and unmarked packages would turn his world upside down. Faced with the possibility of losing, not only his life but also that of his family, he would make a deadly decision to ensure the safety of his most precious gems. Listen to the tracks of Eve's Mixtape where the turntable was her life, the two records were her lovers, and the DJ was the uncertain future.

REVIEW

I have to admit that I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the cover also; it's unique and immediately caught my eye. I really enjoyed both Eve and Shamar’s characters a lot, even though there were times I wanted to grab them both and shake some sense into them.

For example, with Eve’s character, I completely understood her feeling like she wasn't appreciated. As women, it's fair to say we've all felt that way at some point in our lives. I don't agree how the character deals with her issues, by trying to spark a flame with someone new. With Shamar’s character, I felt like he was too preoccupied with his job a lot of the time and seemed to be unaware of how he came across as uncaring. Towards the end, I started to warm up to his character eventually. Only because I started to realize the reasons behind why he seemed so cut off at times. With everything he was dealing with, I think it was just his way of trying not to involve his family and ultimately protect them.
My favorite part from this book was that each chapter was a song track. Each song played an important role in each chapter and blended well with the message.

For me, it was a great story about life choices and what people are willing to endure and sacrifice for Love and Family.

REVIEW

This book was just okay for me, Kara’s character just came across as very nonchalant to me. She was just too preoccupied with getting older and her own wants and needs. It was like one minute she was content with her life and then "Bam” a switch was flipped and she felt as if she deserved more.
I can understand the husband being crabby at times, but maybe it was due to the fact that he couldn't return to his job after his health problems. I felt like Kara was the main contributing factor of all their relationship problems, and the main reason why things turn out how they do in the end.
The overall progression of how things played out just seemed unrealistic in my opinion. The main problem I had with this book was the way the author felt the need to go into way to much detail while describing really expensive items.  For example: a car that gets mentioned at one point. I didn't feel (as a reader) that I needed to know the precise model of the car or how expensive an item looked. It just didn't seem overly important to the plot in my opinion.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and liked that I was way off when it came to the ending. I was pleasantly surprised with the ending.
